Late 19th.c. Burr Walnut Card Table c.1880.

Good quality late 19th.c. burr wlanut fold over card table c.1880. Superb figured grane to the top which rotates and opens to reveal the baize playing surface. Supported on a higly decorative base featuring turned colums, carved legs and large finials. Excellent condition, restored and French polished in our workshops.

Edwardian Triple Harvard Bookcase.

We have had pairs of these Wernicke style 'Harvard' bookcases before but never a set of three. By the well known early 20th.c. manufacturer Minty they are identical triplets and can be used individually or stood together to fill a wall. Restored and repolished.

George II Supper Table. c.1750.

At first glance it seems like just another fold over tea table, albeit on of unusual design. Look a little more closely and you'll notice the pleasing lines, the pierced detail and the early, Chippendale style foot. Try to lift it and you'll be aware of the quality of the timber used. Spend a little more time with it and you might just fall in love with this table.
A wonderful piece of Georgian furniture dating from the middle of the 18th century. The back legs hinge open to support the top which folds over to make a very elegant square supper table. Rare, beautiful, practical and small - what more could you want?

New Stock & Mystery Solved

Hello again everyone and happy Saint David's Day. Plenty of new stock to catch up with and we hope to have the new website go live by the end of the week.
Regarding the last week's mystery item I am very grateful to one regular blog reader who identified it as a pewter 'Gibson Spoon'. Invented by Charles Gibson in 1827 it allowed medicines to be given to those who couldn't , or wouldn't keep still including children, the mentally ill and even animals. A dose was placed in the chamber and the lid closed, with your thumb over the hole in the handle the spoon was placed in the patients mouth and when the thumb was removed the medicine was dispensed (how you got them to swallow it was another matter!) . New for today is this elegant late Victorian inlaid mahogany dressing table and matching marble top two drawer washstand (though it would make a very nice side or hall table) which have just arrived this morning. Superb quality manufacture and in good unrestored condition with original handles and casters.

New Stock - Collectibles.

A couple of pieces of new stock here which have both turned out to be more interesting and (hopefully) collectible than first thought. You can follow both on ebay here.
First up is a delightful mid 19th.c. Pratt ware paste jar with wonderfully detailed polychrome printed scene of the British fleet at anchor.

Despite the poor condition, with various chips, cracks and bumps, most noticeable around the neck it seems this is a rare and sought after pot. The design is largely unaffected bar extensive crazing. Not sure of the manufacturer. There is a small impressed mark to the base.
Dimensions: height 8cm, diameter at base 7.5cm, diameter at mouth 6cm.

Next is an attractive and good sized King's pattern salt spoon which when it came in black with tarnish was largely ignored by us all. After it was given a good clean we realised that the marks on the reverse were in fact Irish hallmarks (hence the lack of a lion mark) dating the piece to the Dublin assay office in 1804 . Of potentially even further interest is the unusual crown and thistle crest on the handle.

Stars & Stripes Sea Chest.

I would love to know the history of this item, a new arrival here this afternoon. A good 19th.c. hardwood seaman's chest. Whilst it has lost it's original hinges and locks and the outside has probably been stripped, inside the lid it retains a great painted detail combining the British red ensign with the US stars and stripes. An evocative detail perhaps recording the origins of its original owner.

Oak Side Table.

Another of today's new arrivals. This is a nice example of an early 19th.c. single drawer side table or 'lowboy'. With a pierced and shaped frieze below the drawer, shaped sides, carved brackets below the top, oak drawer linings and original brass handles. Good colour and condition having been previously restored.

The Big Cheese!

Sorry, I just couldn't resist that. This splendid mid 19th.c. majolica stilton dish and cover stands an impressive 11" tall with a diameter of 12". Modelled as a coopered barrell and decorated with primroses with a stem for the handle. Unmarked but almost certainly by the noted British majolica manufacturer George Jones.

An exciting new arrival here this afternoon in the unconventional shape of this Arts and Crafts oak hall robe c.1910. Loads of nice details here including the tapered shape, the flared cornice, glazed cupboard door and original hinges. Very much in the style of Liberty & Co, we have not yet been able to establish the maker. In need of a little TLC, I shall post again when it is on the floor.

Small Early 19th.c. Longcase Clock.

One of the highlights of the week was this early 19th.c. longcase clock with an 8 day movement by Walker of Nantwich. With a good oak and mahogany case standing just 85" tall, quite a bit shorter than most longcases. The attractive face features a working date wheel, quality painting and original hands. The case has been newly French polished and the works have been cleaned and overhauled and are guaranteed for 12 months.

Following on last week's highlights, here is another fine piece of period oak furniture. This delightful two door and two drawer hanging livery cupboard c.1750. was discovered in house in the Conwy valley from where it almost certainly originated. With excellent fielded panels on the doors and retaining its original elm shelves, drawer linings and top board, also original oak back boards. A very rare item.

Pair Red Leather Chesterfield Sofas.

Quality leather Chesterfields are not a common find and a true pair are rarer still. This wonderful pair of vintage red leather low back chesterfield sofas c.1950 are a new arrival today. Superb quality manufacture, attractively worn but still in very good condition. I can't think we have ever had such a nice pair in stock.

Cwpwrdd Tridarn c.1750.

Delighted to welcome this fine oak Tridarn to the shop this morning. The Welsh Cwpwrdd Tridarn (or three piece cupboard) is recognised now as a distinct form unique to the area which comprises Snowdonia and the area around Caernarfon. Produced from the mid 17th.c. until the end of the 18th.c. it is an adaption of the more common court cupboard. With the addition of a canopied top tier providing an area for the display of the household's best table ware protected from dirt and soot of an open fire. Over time this display section grew to include several shelves, the middle was lost and the form of the typical Welsh dresser emerged.

Today's new arrival is a splendid example of the form. A good sized canopy with turned columns and shaped side panels above an attractive central section with two small cupboard doors either side of a delightful set of four small drawers. With a two door cupboard base featuring the same well shaped fielded panels. Unusually small proportions, excellent colour and quality timber, solid oak construction throughout, original backboards.

A spectacular new arrival here this afternoon. This wonderful mid 18th.c. refectory table has a three plank top which measures a remarkable 9'8". Great colour and patina, some later work and restoration on the base though it does retain its original one piece oak stretcher.

This low Edwardian mahogany cabinet is an unusual piece of furniture. With an arrangement of pigeon holes behind the two sliding doors it would appear to be piece of period office furniture. The previous owner however made good use of it as TV stand, with the various boxes hidden inside together with DVDs and computer games. Excellent colour and condition.

Camphor Wood Sea Chest.

A great relic from the days of long sea passages, this mid 19th.c. brass travelling chest is of solid camphor wood, which not only lent its attractive aroma to garments stored inside but also protected them from insects and moths. Cleaned and polished in our workshops it is original throughout including the heavy brass handles on each end. The flat top means it would serve well a unusual coffee table.

Featuring glazed two door top with three adjustable shelved over a two door cupboard base with a single drawer. Flame mahogany door panels and octagonal columns to the base. The top has unusual carved glazing bars and a well shaped cornice. The bottom lock is a replacement otherwise original throughout. In beautiful condition having been traditionally french polished in our workshops.

With seven oak lined drawers and a small two door cupboard in the centre, it is a large piece of furniture with ample storage. The carving is later, typically late Victorian and the handles probably date from the same period. Good even colour and solid, unrestored condition.

To conclude the blog for the first week of 2011 is this stupendous carved oak four poster bed. Of solid pale oak with panelled headboard and octagonal posts topped with exuberantly castellated pediments. Measuring a very impressive 6 foot wide by 6 foot 9 inches long, this is no ordinary bed.

Another interesting new arrival this afternoon in the shape of this unusual Edwardian mahogany bow front corner display c.1910. With Gothic arched detail to the cornice which is repeated in the glazing bars of the door. With three shelves, the top shelf features a cut-away allowing you to stand a taller item on the middle shelf.

Whilst the quality of manufacture of antique wardrobes is way above anything you would find today they do sometimes face the problem of just not being big enough for the amount of clothes people tend to have today. This is unlikely to be a problem with this colossus which is newly arrived this morning.

Measuring 8 feet in total length it comprises a full two door hanging wardrobe and a two door press fitted with slides (easily removed for more hanging space) and drawers. With two very large additional drawers in the base. Superb quality, original mirrors and handles. It is going into the workshop for a little restoration, I shall post again when it emerges.

An unusual new arrival at the shop this morning in the shape of this early 19th.c. folding mahogany breakfast table on a pedestal base c.1830. A rare Pembroke style mechanism which holds both leaves rigid with two hinged brackets on each side. When closed it reveals this beautifully veneered central cylinder.

An interesting contrast here between two chests from opposite sides of the globe.

First up, a new arrival yesterday, a 19th. century Indian strong box. Elaborate and decorative panelled construction reinforced with iron plates. Raised on turned feet, with carry handles at each end. A good height to use as a coffee table.

Apologies for the lack of posts yesterday - lots of new stock, I just ran out of time. Anyway here is the first of yesterday's highlights. A good Georgian mahogany clothes press. Lots of nice features including flame mahogany door panels, solid mahogany sides, oak drawer linings and back boards, dental cornice and original handles. All this and a great small size. It has gone into the workshop for a little work, I shall post again when it is done.

18th.c. Oak Dresser Base.

Much chin stroking here today as we try and establish the origins of this fantastic 18th.c oak dresser base.

The unusual design features include an inverted breakfront, a central bank of three drawers but no drawers above the cupboards, shaped and fielded panels on each end and striking, very deeply carved, quarter columns on the front corners. Solid oak construction throughout with original drawer linings and floorboards and a superb original oak six panel back all point to a construction date in later decades of the 18th. century . It will be going into the workshop for a little restoration, in the meantime we will keep digging to try and find some clue as to where it originated.

A couple of interesting new arrivals here at the warehouse this afternoon. First up is this good early 19th.c. dresser base. Good colour and condition, retaining original handles. A little time in the workshop should see it restored to glory.

Amongst the rest of the new stock is this good Georgian mahogany chest of drawers. The classic design of two over three drawers, the top right hand drawer is fitted with several compartments and two little drawers. A delightful and original extra feature. This will probably be the last post for the rest of this week as I am off to the big smoke for a few days. In the meantime new stock will of course still be arriving so do please call in if you can.

Boxing Clever - Late Georgian Oak Mule Chest c.1800.

For a good sized piece of period oak furniture with loads of storage at a fraction of the price of a dresser base, coffers, chest and mule chests (featuring drawers as well as a lift up lid) are well worth considering.

As an example here is a good sized late Georgian oak mule chest c.1800. Solid oak throughout with panelled front, sides and back and a good flat top. Two useful drawers below. The original candle box is retained inside the chest. Excellent colour and condition.

Yew Wood Windsor Chair c.1800.

For colour, quality and condition this is a Windsor chair which ticks all the boxes. The yew wood arms, backrest and splat are an attractive and collectible detail which raises this chair above the run of the mill. Add to that the curved 'crinolin' stretcher the unusual shaped arm support and the spectacular colour and patina and you have something pretty special to end the week on. I'll stop drooling now. Victorian Mahogany Extending Dining Table.

As Autumn tightens its grip on the weather and the nights get longer we can all console ourselves to the changing seasons and keep away the cold by spending more time inside sharing the warmth of friends and family and some good food. And here is the ideal venue for a jolly evening of feasting.

You can comfortably seat 10 around this mid Victorian mahogany dining table or take one or two of the removable leaves out to reduce it to an eight or six seater. The top is solid mahogany, absolutely dead flat and in great condition having been newly French polished in our workshop. With a good carved leg raised on brass casters. The table opens and closes smoothly on a corkscrew mechanism which has been cleaned and overhauled. Handle supplied.
