Scottish Chest of Drawers. c.1860.

Before the age of mass communication and transport furniture was often subject to quite marked regional differences. As certain styles proved popular with the local market and the apprentice system ensured particular skills and methods were used for several decades so classics like the Welsh Dresser, the Windsor Chair, the Lancashire Ladderback were established. Another such distinct regional classic is the Scottish chest of drawers. This one is new out on the floor today and it is typical of its breed.
A large chest of drawers in mahogany with a single deep drawer in the centre, flanked by four small drawers. Above that is a single drawer hidden in the cornice (accessible only from inside the deep drawer) and below three good deep drawers. The whole is flanked by turned half columns and stands on bun feet. Particularly nice veneers, oak drawer linings, original knobs and feet.
