Luggage Trunk c.1900.
I love the quality of vintage luggage and here is superb example from the very early years of the twentieth century. Very clean with original leather handles and elaborately reinforced with oak batons and metal straps, corners and a metal base. It carries a Cunard New York to Liverpool lable on one side.

Carved Walnut Settee.
Things That Go Bump In The Night.
It was a bit of a disastrous start to the week yesterday when we came to work and discovered a large mirror had come off the wall overnight causing quite a bit of damage. Oh well, these things happen and if they should happen to you don't panic. Collinge antiques offers a full restoration service, and with most antique furniture being made of good solid materials its rare that something can't be put back together. Whilst we are talking about accidental damage it seems like a good opportunity to mention insurance too - do you have an up to date valuation on your antique furniture? Again it is service we are happy to provide. Most objects can be valued via email with a good set of images. We can then provide a written valuation for you to produce should you have your own mysterious night time catastrophe. Right I'm off to hoover the floor again - it's remarkable how far shattered glass flies!

Large Sideboard by Liberty.
Much excitement here today when we were giving this large late 19th.c. carved oak sideboard a clean and discovered it was stamped Liberty & Co. Its not in the style one usually thinks of as Liberty but the quality of the carving and construction is typically excellent as is the exuberant brasswork, which is all original.

Vintage Wardrobe Trunk
New in today a great object from the golden age of cruise line travel. A wonderful vintage steamer trunk finished in yellow canvas which opens to form a small wardrobe and chest of drawers. The luggage lables show it sailed to Southampton on the Angelina Louro (sister ship of the notorious Achille Largo) of the Italian Flotta Lauro line. Typical of the trunks producaed by the US company OahKosh in the 1930's & 40's. The metal hinges, corners and catches could do with a polish, otherwise it is in remarkable condition.

19th.c. Quarryman's Powder Horn.
A fascinating object to kick start the blog again after a few days off and a reminder of one of North Wales' greatest industries. A 19th.c quarryman's powder horn used to carry and pour gunpowder into holes drilled into the slate. Gunpowder was used rather than gelignite as the weaker explosion merely cracked the slate beds rather that blowing the stone into tiny fragments. This is a remarkable artifact discovered locally, just a few miles from the great slate quarry sites of Snowdonia. It is made of a large cattle horn, some 12" long, filled at the wider end with timber held in place with an iron band and stoppered at the point with a wooden bung. The whole is hung on twine from iron fixings.

Georgian Mahogany Press Cupboard.
It is always an extra pleasure to welcome a piece of Georgian furniture into the shop. The quality of the materials, the proportions and the colour are invariably superior to later pieces. Here is a fine example and alo a very practical piece of storage. A Georgian mahogany clothes press with slides in the top section and four small drawers below c.1800. Notice the size and quality of the full panel mahogany veneers in the doors, the good dental cornice and original feet. Typically for furniture of this period the linings in both the slides and the drawers are of oak and quality of construction is excellent.

Tridarn c.1770. More images
More images of the Cwpbwrdd Tridarn which arrived yesterday. Now with the original cornice restored to place and out on the shop floor. This particular example, dating from around 1770, is of unusually small proportions standing 78" by just 55" wide. The small central panels are unusual and the colour and condition are excellent.

Cwpwrdd Tridarn
Pictured here in the not very glamorous surroundings of our workshop is a real star, newly arrived this afternoon. A mid 18th.c. Welsh Cwpbwrdd Tridarn or three piece cupboard, in solid oak c.1750. The tridarn was the forerunner of the traditional Welsh Dresser which began to emerge around this time as the top display section grew to absorb the middle cupboard section, the base remaining largly unchanged. In generally excellent condition, it just needs the cornice putting back on and a gentle clean and polish. I shall post again when it is out in the shop.
